Expressive Type Posters

Testimonial

To push the tactile and expressive nature of the work, letters were constructed by hand using cut paper. This analog approach added texture and dimension, giving the work a raw and intimate quality. In "Creep", starksymmetry and minimal color mirrored the song’s detached melancholy. "Family Tree" leaned into organic forms and muted hues to reflect emotional vulnerability and the layered, haunting tone of the track. "I’m Free" exploded with vibrant colors, geometric shapes, and movement to express the song’s disco-infused energy and joy. Each poster evolved not just in complexity but in emotional depth—capturingsound through shape, space and color. and typographic experimentation.

Creative type skills

This project, completed in Studio 2, challenged students to explore expressive typography by designing a series of three posters inspired by selected songs. The process was structured in phases: the first poster used only type, the second introduced shapes, and the third incorporated both shapes and color. Each step emphasized building visual language through increasingly layered forms of expression. The songs chosen for this series were "Creep" by Radiohead, "Family Tree" by Ethel Cain, and "I'm Free" by Celi Bee. Each track carries a distinct emotional tone and aesthetic world—moody alienation, haunting nostalgia, and euphoric liberation, respectively. The concept behind the designs was to translate these auditory experiences into visual compositions using only typographic elements and compositional rules. Inspiration came from the emotional textures of each song, with an emphasis on symmetry, rhythm, and the materiality of type.
